about chris anthony
Chris Anthony grew up in the farm country of Mt. Clemens, Michigan, with his dad, mom and three older siblings. The family spent countless hours playing music together. At the age of six, Chris received a snare drum for Christmas, and the stage was literally set... music was destined to be a huge part of his life.
Chris embraced his passion and talent for music attending Interlochen Arts Academy High School, in Northern Michigan, followed by Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio. He received his Bachelor of Music in percussion performance at Oberlin, studying under world renowned percussionist Michael Rosen. While attending Oberlin, his talents allowed him to take part in special projects which landed him in New York City, where he studied with Joe Morello of The Dave Brubeck Quartet and with Alan Dawson of the Berkeley School of Music.
Chris moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1989 to work on commercial music projects. Along with a side venture of owning an SF restaurant in the 90's, his music career blossomed for 11 years as Music Director for From The Heart Music, an after school music program for children.
In 1976, the family was told that Chris's father Gary was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Chris knew something serious was wrong when he was about 14 years old, when his Dad told him he couldn't come out for baseball anymore. He was not feeling well and was having trouble keeping his balance. MS was just starting to take its toll, however, Gary is a true fighter and was not willing to accept that this disease would run his life. He continues to be a strong person today, with dreams and goals and an unparalleled tenacity. In the year 2000, Chris's sister Kathy was also diagnosed with this devastating disease.
Feeling an overwhelming desire to give back, Chris has become an active fund raiser for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. He has organized several innovative events over the last 10 years, raising nearly $30K for MS research and support groups. Events have included golf tournaments and a bowl-a-thon. Chris was honored by the MS Society at their annual awards dinner in 2004 for his fund raising achievements.
"I feel that as healthy individuals, we must have the energy and compassion to do whatever it takes to raise money for this worthy cause. We are fortunate to be able to help... and who knows when we might need that helping hand?" says Chris.
Chris is the sole proprietor of True Beat Music Services, which provides private instruction in percussion and piano. He's an active freelance percussionist as well as a member of the bay area's classic rock & roll band, "The Conniptions". Please visit
